Artist Interview - Lori Leissner

Today I’d like to share an interview with the lovely Lori Leissner, a mixed media artist and “occasional poet” living in Texas.  We met through Flying Lessons, an e-course sponsored by artist Kelly Rae Roberts.  Sit back and enjoy learning more about Lori and her inspirations.

Do you remember when you first really started to enjoy creating things?
When I was a kid, we lived in a tiny, rural town (pop. 291) where there was no cable, no neighbors, and not very many distractions, so I made up my own.  I made mudpies, created a playhouse out of a chicken coop, wrote twanging country songs while sitting on the roof of the barn.  I started drawing in elementary school and got my first camera in middle school.  Beyond elementary school, art was not offered, but I retained an artistic spirit that was just waiting for an opportunity to launch.  My kids are more autonomous now and I have a little space both in my home and in my time for art. So, now's the time!

Who are some artists that have inspired you or are still inspiring you along your creative journey?
Unfortunately, I haven't spent a great deal of time studying artists and am really just now beginning to do that.  It was a style that really captured my attention.  I bought some art technique books and realized mixed media was the art form for me.  From there, I am tracing back to artists that inspire me. Kelly Rae Roberts' book Flying Lessons was one of the first books I bought.  At some point, I discovered Mae Chevrette on Etsy.  I love her youthful, carefree personality.
Do you have a muse or an inspiration that helps you with your creations and design?
My goal is to speak my faith in Christ Jesus through my art.  While not every piece is an overt testimony, I try to base my art on Christian principles by either acknowledging the difficulties of navigating the temptations of the world or to recognize the wonder of God's blessings here on Earth.  I use a lot of scripture and faith based quotations in my art.

If you could have lunch with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be and why?
I'd like to have another lunch with my dad.  He died suddenly 3 years ago.  Because he was gone in an instant, there were some things left unsaid.  It would be an amazing blessing to get to say those things and kiss his forehead one more time.

What do you do for a living, outside of creating artwork?
I'm a Quality Assurance Specialist.  If I weren't a Quality Assurance Specialist for a living, I would definitely be an artist. :)

What is your favorite quote, motto or affirmation?
In her book One Thousand Gifts, Ann Voskamp writes about finding grace in the trials and tragedies of life by really looking for it, focusing on how God uses those things to draw us closer to Him and giving thanks for those things.  The line that stands out most for me in her book is, "The remedy is in the retina."  The solution to our unhappiness is to find the grace because it's there.  It's always there.  We just have to see it and give thanks for it.  I love that.

Do you have a community of other artists or friends/family members who you consider to be supportive of your creative endeavors?
I don't know any artists locally.  My mom and my husband are my biggest cheerleaders.    My on-line friends from Kelly Rae Roberts' Flying Lessons class are my go-to gals for art advice and guidance.

If you have an afternoon free, all by yourself, what would your dream day look like?

Assuming my house is already clean, I would make some coffee, sit on the porch for a while in my rocking chair soaking up some sun and communing with nature and my dog Sophie.   Next I would go upstairs, turn up the Needtobreathe and Third Day, crack open the gel medium and start tearing, gluing and painting.
Do you have any favorite blogs you enjoy reading and would you share them with us?

I love The Pioneer Woman. She's hilarious and knows how to cook, too.  I just found All Things Heart and Home and am in love with it.

Do you have any future dreams or goals that you are working on or dreaming about?

I would love be able to quit my day job at some point and just make art full time either for fun or for income (ideally both!).
What advice would you give to aspiring artists who truly want to live a creative life?

Although I'm not sure I'm in a position to give advice on how to live a creative life at this point, general life experience I've gained that's worth sharing is to never give up.  Take a break.  Pause.  Detour.  Rewrite the script.  But don't give up.  There's always a way.
I would love to thank Lori for sharing her life and inspirations with us.  She's a positive and creative woman who is touching so many lives with her outlook and her art.   I'm sure those of you who know her will agree.  You can visit her creations at Leissner Art.

My Wise Athena

The Halloween festivities have already started around here.  Isabella chose to be the goddess Athena this year and I think she looks so sweet.  She has a love of Greek Mythology thanks to Rick Riordan's books (The Lightning Thief series), so she was thrilled to find an Athena costume.  Friday at school they got to wear their costumes already (the 21st) in preparation for their first school dance of the year, the Halloween Bash.  She had a blast because not only did they have a D.J. in the gym but the cafeteria was full of activities as well like a fun photo booth, a fortune teller and much more.

This is the first dance that parents are not required to be at because she's at an intermediate school (5-8th).  Exciting for her and her friends, but a little sad for me.  I was going to be a chaperone but decided to have a date night with the husband instead.  It was great to see her when she came home because it was a blast for her.

Now yesterday for our little nephew Kane's first birthday party, my brother and his wife made it a Halloween party, so we had another dose of costumes and fun.  They really went overboard and put on a great time.  There were little pumpkins for the kids to carve and paint.  They had a monster pinata in the driveway.  We went on a "Great Pumpkin" walk through their neighborhood carrying lit pumpkins with kids and some adults in costumes making lots of noise which really turned out to be fun--many drivers honking horns and neighbors popping outside to wave "hi."  So many little cuties in costumes ranging in age from 7 weeks to 12 years old.  A great night of fun for kids and us grown-ups.

(her "monkey" pumpkin she made for the birthday boy-even has a curly tail in back)

Thanks for visiting today.  I hope you all find some fun in the fall holidays like we have so far.

Overwhelmed at the Moment!

Like is a bit crazy here right now.  I'm thrilled but I'm a bit overwhelmed.  I'm thrilled that I'm going to be showing my paintings in an exhibit in Milwaukee but I'm overwhelmed that I need 10-20 of them by Halloween.  You'd think that wouldn't be a problem, right?  I have tons of paintings completed, right?  Well, this show is a mini's exhibit.  All under 8x8 inches.  I have nothing under 8x8 inches.  I'm not going to turn down this opportunity, but wow, this is not how I'm used to creating I guess.

I have three done and am working on five more right now.  I ordered ten more 6x6 canvases from Dick Blick and they should be here within a few days (I hope).  This is a picture of an 8x8 I've done, which is the smallest I've completed.  I included it because it is one of my dreams to show my work in an exhibit and that dream is slowly coming true!

If anyone has any advice on dealing with creating art under pressure, I'd love to hear it.  Please!!!

I do have a few more artist interviews coming soon, so please stop back and check for those too!

Artist Interview with Linda Barutha

Today I’d like to share an interview with artist and fellow Wisconsinite, Linda Barutha of Linda Barutha Designs.  We met through Flying Lessons, an e-course sponsored by artist Kelly Rae Roberts.   Linda is a gal-of-all-trades, dipping herself into paint, papercraft, crochet as well as teaching others.
Do you remember when you first really started to enjoy creating things?
Growing up money was tight for our family, so my mom always had us crafting something as gifts for the holidays.  At the time I had no idea it was a money issue.  I just thoroughly enjoyed crafting.

Who are some artists that have inspired you or are still inspiring you along your creative journey?
My brother is an amazing artist, but he really doesn’t practice his talent.  And, my uncle was a professional artist all of his life, so maybe there is some genetics involvedJ  I have followed Donna Downey since her beginning scrapbooking days and love her constant growth and passion.  Melody Ross is also another artist that inspires me because she has made me feel okay with inter-mixing my passion of inspiring anyone to make art and just love being themselves.  Which also takes me to Christy Tomlinson.  Another great mixed-media artist that shares my passion for teaching.

Do you have a muse or an inspiration that helps you with your creations and design?
Over the years I’ve become quite particular about what inspires me.  Typically, it’s a feel or style that I’m trying to achieve.
If you weren’t an artist, what do you think you’d do for a living?
Although I’m not currently relying on my art for my financial obligations, I can’t imagine not having a form of creativity in my life.  I seem to crave it.

What is your favorite quote, motto or affirmation?
“There are no mistakes in art”.

Do you have a community of other artists or friends/family members who you consider to be supportive of your creative endeavors?
Thanks to Kelly Rae Roberts, I now have the honor of being a part of the elite artists that I took her Flying Lessons course with.  The support I receive from them truly has been a highlight of my daily life.  It really does help to keep my business focus in the forefront of my mind.

Do you have any favorite blogs you enjoy reading and would you share them with us?
I’ve been blogging for quite a few years, and I follow well over 250 blogs right now.  My favorites change all the time.  My top three right now are Christy Tomlinson, Donna Downey and Kris Lanae Binsfeld.

Do you have any future dreams or goals that you are working on or dreaming about?
Currently, I’m working on creating enough art and then hiring a licensing agent to help me line up contracts.  I’m also in the beginning stages of writing my second book and launching an online art course.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists who truly want to live a creative life?
Simply do what you love.  Don’t fall victim to thinking you “can’t”.  You can do anything you set your mind to.

Thank you so much for sharing yourself with us, Linda!
I hope you all enjoyed learning a bit more about Linda as well.  Personally she's an inspiration to me and I'm excited for her to achieve her upcoming goals such as writing a second book.

Etsy Love - Gallery Zo

Here's another beatiful creation from an etsy artist whom I've admired for a while.  Her shop is called Gallery Zo and one of my favorite items by far is Show Your Colors.  First of all, it caught my eye immediately with its colors and design--what a huge impact that painting can make on a wall!  I love her style of using different layers of patterns and colors to bring her creations to life.

Thanks, Zorana for such beautiful inspiration!

Thanks to any visitors who are stopping by today to see a little more of my "etsy love"!

See ya Bright Eyes

Me and my paintings were in a craft show this past Saturday at an area church (I know--bad grammar).  Long story, short:  craft fairs aren't my thing.  I need to stick with art shows.  But I did sell one of my newest paintings called "Bright Eyes" and I was actually sad to see her go.  She went to a good home--a girl my daughter knows who already owns another of my giraffe paintings--so I'm glad this seventh-grader Hailey was thrilled to get her.

However, I just finished her (Bright Eyes) about a week before and didn't have her sitting around very long before she was sold.   I really was proud of her and giraffes are my favorite animal, so it just felt weird to get rid of her so quickly!

Do you know what I mean?  I know she's just a painting, but it was hard, believe it or not.  Have you ever created a piece of art that was ultimately for sale, but it was hard to let it go?

I guess maybe this is telling me I need to create more giraffes?  Hmmmm....

Thanks for visiting today and I hope you're having a good week.  We're having amazing fall weather in Wisconsin all week--the 70s--so I'm looking forward to enjoying these days before the cold finally sets in for good.
