So Very Grateful

Thanksgiving is only a few days away and I of course am thinking of all I have to be grateful for.  I actually think about that everyday to be honest, but I thought sharing them in a post would be a great reminder of all the gifts I have.

My colorful, creative, loving, caring and sparkling girl Isabella.  She brings so much joy into my days.

Amazing, fun and supportive, life-long friends...friends since grade school - priceless for sure.

Being interviewed for a local magazine called 30 West - yay!

Achieving one of my goals of having my artwork for sale in a "real" shop, the Waxwing in Shorewood.

A new sweet little niece Cora born this August.

Attending the Bloom True Artist Retreat by Flora Bowley this September (another item I had on my list of dreams and goals for this year).

Of course I have tons more to be thankful for, like my eye sight, the beautiful sky, my cozy house, my creative community of friends, etc. but these are just a few that stood out from 2012.

I found this great quote yesterday while reading the book Daring Greatly by Brene Brown and I'll leave you with this:
"It is not joy that makes us grateful; it is gratitude that makes us joyful"
by Brother David Steindl-Rast.

What are some of the things you are grateful for from the past year?  I'd love to hear them--it always makes my heart full to hear what others are thankful for.

Thanks for stopping by - I hope you have a wonderful holiday!

Dreaming and Trying to Keep my Shine

I have a lot of dreams, some of them have come true...some of them I'm still working toward.  But, wow, not having them happen right when I want them to can be pretty hard sometimes.  Makes me wonder if they ever will come true or even if they're meant to, you know?  Sometimes I even wonder if these dreams of mine are realistic.  But, are dreams meant to be realistic anyway?  Probably not.  Whoever thought of walking on the moon was probably considered a nutcase at first.  Whoever thought we could send messages by typing on a computer wasn't probably too realistic many years ago either, right?

But I've really been wondering:  if they were meant to be they would happen and they wouldn't be so hard, right? Well, maybe not. Probably not. Maybe if they aren't happening, I should throw in the towel--maybe it's a sign these dreams of mine aren't meant to be. I've heard that saying many times about anything worth achieving is probably hard work and worth that hard work.  Well right now, things have been a little hard for me.  I don't really want to go into specific details, but I'm having some struggles.

It does help to have support of those closest to you as well.  A personal cheering squad so-to-speak.  I have a girlfriends that are here for me...I do wish some of them lived closer though!  Unfortunately, some of the people "closest" to me just aren't part of that cheering squad, and I think that's what's making things feel so much harder to handle right now.  But I really am thankful for the ones that are here right now.  Don't know what I'd do without them!

I also get tons of inspiration from a few great authors such as Patti Digh and recently Danielle LaPorte who said in her book The Firestarter Sessions:  "Intend to shine...You can be a magnet for goodness even in hard times, if you simply choose to accentuate the positive and focus on where you want to go" (p. 102).  This quote is something pushing me forward right now.  Hopefully you can find a little inspiration from it as well.

My Vision Board for 2012

I had been collecting words and images for my vision board since after Christmas.  Full of steam, then I stopped.  I'm like that at times--so gung ho, then I lose that steam.  Not sure if it's fear or what, but following through and finishing things is sometimes hard for me.  I don't even like to finish a bottle of shampoo before I can move on to a newer, better, fuller one.  I'm working on it though!

Here it's mid-January and my vision board is complete. Well, sort of.  There are a few blank spaces I guess I feel like I should have filled up every white space, but didn't. I can always add more later, right? It's hanging on the closet door in my studio/home office where I can look at it everyday for inspiration.  I read somewhere that I should put a picture of myself in the center, looking happy, which I thought would be a great idea.  Me looking happy surrounded by uplifting words, dreams, goals and pictures.  My picture is from a night in November that I had some mini canvases displayed at ArtBar in Milwaukee.  Two of my best friends in the world went with me on this Friday night to celebrate.  Now it's not like this exhibit was a solo one at all; there were tons of other minis, but for some reason I felt on top of the world that night.  That's why I chose this picture--I can just see and feel my excitement from that night.

I found positive and inspiring words such as: guts, confidence, joy, peace, creative fun, feeling good, sparkle, etc.  You can see them so I won't rewrite them for you.  Also, those of you who know me are aware that I was really excited about Flora Bowley and her Bloom True workshop coming to Wisconsin, so I even printed a photo of her painting on the bottom left, in hopes that I would be able to paint with and learn from her this year.  Sure enough, a few days after I finished my vision board, I was able to get registered into her class.  Though I don't have a lot of pictures, the others I have depict water, the beach, people doing yoga and overall tropical locations.  This is where I feel most at peace and want to invite more of that into my life--more travel and more yoga and meditation.

Thanks for stopping by to check out my vision board for 2012.  Looking at it makes me feel excited for the upcoming year and the continuing journey I am on.

What are you Hoping for 2012?

As 2012 approaches, I think of new beginnings, new hopes, dreams and goals.  Of the changes I hope I can make, (like getting organized like I want to do every year).
(Photo courtesy of Brave Girls Club)

I've read a lot of fellow bloggers are choosing a word or theme for the year and I'm mulling that over as well as all the dreams I have bouncing around in my heart and mind.  Two words quickly pop into my head:  create and believe.  But....create should be already in practice to begin with, perhaps create more, create more regularly--just don't think it's precise enough though.  Then believe crosses my mind too.  Believe in myself, believe in my art, believe in my dreams...you get the picture.  There's another "but" coming though.  Is "believe" active enough, concrete enough?  I just don't think so.  I feel like I need something stronger that will really get my dreams and wishes moving.  I think I need to state my concrete dreams and intentions for the new year first then perhaps my theme or word will come more easily and obviously.  One of my sweet friends from Flying Lessons suggested making an inspiration board which is a great idea--laying things down right there in front of me.  So that's my next plan, to make a visual of what I want next year to look like.  Recently I read somewhere that your dreams won't come true if you don't even know what they are and writing things down or saying them makes them more real, more powerful.

I'd really love to hear some of your dreams, intentions or theme for next year.  Please share them here if you can.

Thanks for stopping by and happy holidays!  I hope it's filled with peace, togetherness and lots of laughter.

Artist Interview with Ann Marie of That Girl Designs

Today I'm excited to share an interview with Ann Marie of That Girl Designs.  We met through Flying Lessons, an e-course sponsored by artist Kelly Rae Roberts.  Ann Marie is a former custom jewelry artist who owned a boutique and now is living her dream of being an interior designer and artist, and along with her husband, owns Go Design, a design + build company in Austin, Texas.
Do you remember when you first really started to enjoy creating things?
I don’t remember a specific age at which I found my love of creating and designing, but from a very early age I loved to color!  In fact, I would spend hours with my coloring books and even submitted my “works of art” to local grocery store coloring contests.  I was always very precise with my coloring, making sure to color in the lines. ( That was my left brain fighting for a spot in the activity.) What is funny to think of now, is that my mother was an extremely talented seamstress.  She would have loved for me to join her and be her student, but I was a tomboy and would have no part of girl stuff like sewing or cooking.

Who are some artists that have inspired you or are still inspiring you along your creative journey?
Rex Ray is one of my favorite currently active artists.  His collage work is so inspiring to me.  I bought his book, keep it in my studio, and look at it often.  Beatriz Milhazes is another artist whose work always inspires me.  Her use of color speaks to me as it is how I think of color in my own mind.  I always say that “color is my muse” and her work certainly is color rich.

Which brings me to my next question which you partially answered above: Do you have a muse or an inspiration that helps you with your creations and design?
Color is my main muse, but nature is right up there with it.  In fact, I get a ton of color inspiration from looking at nature.  The color of the sky as a backdrop to the green tree tops.  That sort of thing.  And, this might seem strange, but words, phrases and quotes are also ever inspiring.  I actually painted a recent work based solely on a word and its definition.  It came so easy to me, that I plan to do more art based on single words and their meanings.

If you could have lunch with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be and why?
Totally not art related, but I would have lunch with Cary Grant.  He is my all time favorite movie star.  I just read his daughter’s book about her life with him and his fathering of her and fell even more in love with him.  I own most of his movies and watch them over and over.  His comedic roles never cease to make me happy.
If you weren’t an artist, what do you think you’d do for a living?
Well, since I’m an interior designer, I guess I already have an alternate to being an artist.  Although, the two are very closely related.  Honestly, I’ve waited so long in life to be a creative, that I can’t even think of any other career that would be suitable. Or acceptable!
What is your favorite quote, motto or affirmation?
My own mantra is “find your peace” and another is “i have all the tools within me to have the life i want to live.”  (That second one is going to be a poster for sale in my shop soon.)  Favorite quotes include: “your work is to discover your work and then to give yourself to it with all of your heart”  Buddha.  And.... “live a balanced life.  learn some and drink some, and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some” by Robert Fulghum.  Each of those are on my blog home page.
I know your husband is your partner, aside from him, do you have a community of other artists or friends/family members who you consider to be supportive of your creative endeavors?
My friends and family are supportive, but until KRR’s class and meeting all of you, no I didn’t have an artist community.  I’m so, so grateful to have found all of my Flying Lessons peeps!  My husband and my son are incredibly supportive of my art making and have given me courage to put it out there in the world.

If you have an afternoon free, all by yourself, what would your dream day look like?
I’m pretty fortunate, and actually have lots of free time (wasn’t always the case) and every chance I get, I’m up in the studio creating art.
Do you have any favorite blogs you enjoy reading and would you share them with us?
Yes, in no particular order:
http://lovelife.typepad.com/ - love this gal’s take on life.
http://crazysexylife.com/ - this one is about wellness, nutrition, and spirit.  It is Kris Carr’s blog who is a gal living with cancer which she “treats” through healthy living and a plant based diet.  She also has documentary called Crazy Sexy Cancer.  Good stuff on this blog.

http://thisiscolossal.com/ - just really cool stuff found here.  Great inspiration for creatives of all types.
Do you have any future dreams or goals that you are working on or dreaming about?
I constantly dream of having a second home outside of Texas.  I love my home state, but really feel the pull of a cooler climate. My recent trip to the mountains of Colorado sealed the deal.  It is the mountains for me.  One of my goals is to sell my artwork to help us pay off debt and save for travels and a little home somewhere in New Mexico or Colorado.  I’ve got it on the three year plan!

What advice would you give to aspiring artists who truly want to live a creative life?
Just to never give up.  I just turned 47.  I went back to school at age 44 to pursue my interior design degree.  I’ve waited a lifetime, or it seems, to live a creative life.  I’ve done all the things I had to do to get here.  I was a single parent for a while and worked many, many 9 to 5’s and jobs I hated just to pay the bills.  My point is, that I believe that we are where we are supposed to be at any given time, and that there are many hills on the way to the mountain top.  Never give up on reaching that mountain top.  It will happen!
*************
I would like to thank Ann Marie for sharing so much with us about herself, her art and her future goals.  I especially love her optimism and positive outlook.  I hope you enjoyed "meeting" her as well.

Live it Up!

I absolutely love this quote and think I should post it somewhere more visible to remind me that I only have one life, I'd better do all the fun and interesting stuff my heart longs to do.

"Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely, in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting 'Holy shit...what a ride!'"        ~John Mallow

Photo:  NY Daily News.com

Seriously, I want to really live.  I'm sure I'm thinking of this because I'm getting close to 40 and reality is saying that I'm not a kid anymore.  If I have desires and dreams I need to start doing them now, or at least planning them now.

Do you have any wild dreams or just any dreams of things you really want to experience, but have been putting off  for some reason or other?

A few of mine are:  go to Italy, Greece, Bali and Bora Bora (I know, not very cheap dreams)!  I have to work on some cheaper, more doable ones, but I need to start now.  Perhaps I need to make that bucket list that so intrigued me from the movie with Jack Nicholson.

Girl Power

Reach for the stars.  Follow your dreams.  Dream big.  Be an ORIGINAL.  Be true to yourself.  These are just some of the inspirational and IMPORTANT messages I'm trying to convey in my new painting "Girl Power."

Growing up I was never taught these things.  I was taught to settle down, don't get so loud and excited.  I was even asked why I would want to go to college, when all I really would probably be doing is getting married and having babies.  I want girls to have a different message than those limiting ones, espeically since I have a daughter of my own.  I want her to feel that she has power, the power to be what she wants, the power to follow her dreams and her heart and the power to be true to herself.

Maybe you know a young girl who you can encourage to be herself and not always worry about what others think.  To listen to her heart.  Help her follow her deepest wishes.
