I'm the kind of person who very easily gets trapped in the past or the future. Whether it's daydreaming about an amazing vacation to Jamaica from a few years back, or worrying about what my relationship with my daughter will be like when she's a full-blown teenager, I'm rarely in the present moment. I've read books on the subject; I jot down quotes to remind me, but still I struggle with this daily. How about you?
Having something in plain-view does help me instead of jotting down some "words of wisdom" in a notebook that gets shoved somewhere on my painting table. Since I love creating paintings with quotes on them I decided to do a little one with "enjoy this moment" collaged on it. I'm sure there are others out there like me who need some reminders too, and why not have it be in the form of "art"?
I'm really wondering if you have any tips for staying present and enjoying the moment I am in instead of dreaming of the past or worrying about the future. I'd love to hear them...share if you can. Thanks so much!
Love the art piece! I find your topic rather ironic because I've been battling with the same issue the past few weeks. So, my brother recommended reading "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle. I started it this weekend and it's very good. If you haven't read it, check it out at the library.
ReplyDeleteHi Linda,
DeleteThanks. I actually have the book - have had it for years -- I think it's time to revisit it--thanks for the reminder!

So important this Jill! I set myself little tasks during the day - like, remember the present moment every full hour, or, every time i sit down, or, when i walk through a door - things like this. It is really difficult because if you try it you see, how often you walk around sleeping ;) But it offers opportunities to wake up and be present at least some times a day!
ReplyDeleteI know, Martina! Maybe I need to have a little sign to myself as a reminder to focus on the now--you know how some people put a rubber band around their wrist and every time they snap it--it reminds them? Something like that, a little ritual or like you said, everytime you sit or walk through a door will help. Thanks!

Jill, I find that I am more in the moment when I carry my camera especially when I am alone. I walk slower, I pause more. I like to say that I listen to my world with my eyes. :)
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting carrying a camera, Lori -- I do notice so much more and so many "little" things are really intriguing. Thanks.
